Starting Line Foundation

Helping more people reach the starting line.

Bikes, gear, coaching, and race entries for people who have the will to start and not the means. We work in cycling, running, swimming, and triathlon — wherever cost is the thing standing in the way.

Why we exist

A start line should not be a price tag.

Endurance sport changes people. It also costs money — a bike, a wetsuit, a coach, an entry fee, a tank of gas to get to the race. For a lot of people that adds up to a closed door, and the door closes long before anyone finds out what they are capable of.

Starting Line Foundation was inspired by Janel Mathews — physician, wilderness medicine fellow, endurance athlete, sister, and servant — who spent her life showing up for other people. She noticed when someone was struggling and moved toward them, usually without saying much about it.

“Janel spent her life helping others move forward. We carry that spirit to the next starting line.”

Programs

Eight ways we get people to the line.

Every program exists to remove one specific barrier — the bike, the entry fee, the gear, the knowledge, the ride there.

Refurbished Bike Access

Donated bikes are inspected, rebuilt, and fitted, then placed with riders who are ready to start but priced out of the first step.

Someone is standing just short of their first start line right now.

A gift of $350 places a fully refurbished, fitted bike with a rider who cannot buy one. $150 covers a race entry. Every amount moves someone forward.
